Kasha es una papilla de cereales, un alimento básico en Rusia. También es lo que se forma en las calles cuando la nieve se mezcla con el barro. Y esto es, quizás, la metáfora más acertada de lo que ocurre con las personas cuando se ven arrastradas por la historia.
Los ciudadanos de Rusia, al igual que los de Ucrania, Sudán, Myanmar o cualquiera de los múltiples conflictos que desangran el mundo, no eligieron esta guerra. Sin embargo, todos comparten algo: quedan hechos kasha por decisiones que no tomaron, molidos por fuerzas que no controlan.
No es necesario estar en el frente para sufrir una guerra; basta con vivir bajo el miedo a la pérdida de un familiar, el peso de la propaganda a través de la exaltación de emociones patrióticas con el objetivo de provocar un alistamiento voluntario, la incertidumbre económica o simplemente la sensación de que el mundo se tambalea bajo tus pies.
Estas fotografías no pretenden juzgar ni explicar, solo documentar cómo se vive cuando marzo se hace eterno y la nieve se convierte en barro.
Al final, todos somos kasha en manos de la historia.

Kasha is a cereal porridge, a staple food in Russia. It is also what forms in the streets when snow mixes with mud. And this, perhaps, is the most fitting metaphor for what happens to people when they are dragged along by history.
The citizens of Russia, like those of Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar, or any of the many conflicts bleeding the world dry, did not choose this war. Yet they all share something: they are made kasha by decisions they did not take, ground down by forces they do not control.
You do not have to be at the front to suffer a war; it is enough to live under the fear of losing a family member, the weight of propaganda stirring up patriotic emotion to drive voluntary enlistment, economic uncertainty, or simply the sense that the world is shifting beneath your feet.
These photographs do not seek to judge or explain, only to document how life is lived when March becomes eternal and snow turns to mud.
In the end, we are all kasha in the hands of history.
